A Shared Vision

Our mission is to create meaningful change within the lives of young people through tailored enrichment programs that promote consciousness, dignity, perseverance, and self-confidence.

We serve Twin Cities youth ages 10-18 experiencing a lack of opportunity or resources, with a focus on Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color(Culture).

SHSGA Fellowship Team

The Fellowship Team encourages and develops golf, academic, and life skills through a tailored curriculum that builds positive relationships with teammates, mentors, and coaches over the course of the summer (in-season) and school year (off-season).

With a focus on Core, College, Career, and Community, the Fellowship Team provides students ages 14-18 with a no-cost, high impact opportunity that builds key knowledge used both on and off the course.

SHSGA Community Programs

Our Community Programs utilize a multi-level approach aimed at building bridges with underserved communities in the Twin Cities area. The SHSGA introduces middle school and high school youth to golf, and provides foundational knowledge and resources that allow students of all skill levels to develop confidence and spark interest in playing golf.

A Game Changer

Born in 1908, Solomon Hughes Sr. became a quiet trailblazer and elite player who helped to end segregation and racial discrimination in professional golf. In addition to his success on the course, Hughes was a dedicated teacher, husband, and father, who ingrained himself as a long respected member of the Twin Cities community.

His reach went beyond Minneapolis, teaching championship boxers Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson as well as golfers Ted Rhodes and Charlie Sifford, the first black players to be admitted to the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA) after it lifted its ‘Caucasians Only’ clause in 1961.

Solomon Hughes Sr.’s contributions to golf and his community serve as the foundation of the SHSGA and remind us that in life, we all stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us.
